About the Recent IRCC Updates and Their Impact on Our Students

What are the new financial requirements for study permit applicants in 2024?

 

From January 1, 2024, the financial requirements for new study permit applicants have increased to $20,635 to align with the rising cost of living and ensure students are financially prepared for their time in Canada.

Is there a cap on international students for the Fall 2024 intake?

 

The Canadian government is considering a cap on international students for the Fall 2024 intake to ensure educational institutions can adequately support all their students, including accommodation services. VIC and SSLC are actively preparing for these potential changes.

Will international students be able to work more than 20 hours a week off-campus?

 

Yes, the exemption allowing international students to work over 20 hours per week off-campus has been extended until April 30, 2024.

Are online studies still counted towards a post-graduation work permit for public schools?

 

For students beginning their studies before September 1, 2024, time spent in online studies will count towards a post-graduation work permit. However, this policy won’t apply to students starting their programs after this date.

Will there be an extension for post-graduation work permits in 2024?

 

The temporary policy granting an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders will not continue in 2024. However, students with permits expiring before December 31, 2023, can still apply for an extension under the 2023 policy.
